What Is A
Mole?
So exactly what is a mole?
If we really want to get technical, the medical definition is "A mole (nevus) is a
pigmented (colored) spot on the outer layer of the skin (epedermis). It may also be referred to as an abnormal collection of pigment cells
present within the skin. These cells are known as melanocytes.
Many people however, refer to a mole as any dark spot or irregulartity in
the skin.

A mole is a spot on the
skin that is usually round or oval in shape. It can be small or large, and it may range in color from pink, brown, red, or
black.
The single skin mole is
referred to in medical terms as a nevus. When one is discussing moles in the plural form, they are called nevi.
Everyone has at least a few moles. They generally appear by the time a person is 20 and look, at first,
like freckles. A mole's color and shape don't usually change in this time frame. As the years pass however, moles usually change slowly,
becoming raised and/or changing colors. Some moles may not change at all, while others may slowly disappear over time.
Statistically one will find between 10-50 moles on the body. Moles can appear anywhere on the skin, alone
or in groups.
