What Causes Moles?
So what causes moles? Well, there are a couple of answers to this question.
Congenital nevi are moles that appear at birth as a result from a proliferation of benign melanocytes in
the dermis, epidermis, or both and occur in about 1 in 100 people. These moles may be more likely to develop into melanoma (cancer) than are
moles that appear after birth. A mole or freckle should be checked if it has a diameter of more than 7 mm.

Moles can also be caused by too much sun exposure and tend to appear in the areas where the skin catches
the most sunlight. Moles become darker when exposed to the sun. If you have moles and you are
constantly going outdoors and exposed to sunlight you may be at risk. Make sure to apply the proper sunscreen.

What Causes Moles?
Moles may also be hereditary. If you do have moles, make
sure that your family doesn't have a history of skin cancer. If skin cancer runs in the family, make sure to see your
dermatologist.
The good news is that most moles are benign. It's only
certain types of moles that come with an increased risk of melanoma - or skin cancer. These moles are often hereditary and are generally
irregular in shape and color.
It's a good idea to keep a close watch on your moles. If
a mole begins to change in shape, size or color or becomes irritated, you should see a dermatologist. But remember, most moles aren't
dangerous. Just think of them as beauty marks.
