Removal of Skin Moles Technique #1: Herbal Products and Creams

One of the most common methods for the removal of moles can be found in an over the counter cream. The cream is applied causing the mole to scab over and within a short period of time, the scab falls off. It takes about a month before the redness completely heals. Scars are rare but they can happen.

Removal of Skin Moles Technique #2: Laser Surgery

Laser treatment is another method of mole removal. While scaring is not an issue for this technique, it is improtant to know this is not a method used for treating deep moles because the laser does not penetrate deeply enough.

For flat moles, skin tags, or protruding moles that have been relatively stable since birth (with no rapid growing, shape changing, etc.) treatment with laser can remove them easily.

This method of removal may require repeated treatments (approximately 1-3) before the mole is gone.  Price ranges from $50-$100 per treatment per mole.

Removal of Skin Moles Technique #3: Surgery

Depending on the type of mole, surgery may be required. Before the mole is removed, the area is cleaned and a shot is given to numb the area. The type of mole being removed determines what technique is used, Depending on the technique, stitches may or may not be used.

For excision of the mole, the surgeon uses a scalpel to cut the mole and a border of good skin surrounding it. Stitches are placed either deep within the skin, or on the upper surface, depending on the depth of the excision.

For the procedure that involves no stitches, a scalpel is used to shave the mole allowing it to be flush with the surrounding skin. Then using an electrical instrument, the doctor cauterizes the area to stop any bleeding. Toopical antibiotic is applied to reduce risk of infection. Shaving removes the protruding surface of the mole, but it can leave mole cells beneath the skin and may eventually grow back.

Mole removal typically takes less than an hour to perform, depending on the size. The average cost to have a mole removed will range anywhere from $150-$200 per mole.

This is considered to be a last resort due to the pain and scaring that may be involved. Due to the fact that the herbal products and creams have become so effective over the years, I would not recommend this method unless the mole is cancerous.

Unfortunately, most medical insurance providers do not cover cosmetic surgery procedures.

The process of excision with cauterization is one in which the mole is burned away using a cautery tool. Stitches are not required for this procedure as the wound is burn-sutured, and will heal naturally.
